Dance For You // k0szzz / hua / kosmic
Yeahhhhh it's finally out!
If you haven't heard of Fredy Kosman, he's an amazing instructor and an even more amazing dancer...
and perhaps I can also add YOUTUBE star because not only are his videos highly watched, 2 of his vids have crossed 1 million views -
Rihanna's Rude Boy
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xIBNu40XW0]
and Where Have You Been
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zgh64jegvck]
In case you can't tell, Fredy's energy is crazy. I love going for his classes and doing his choreo because he really inspires me to push myself when I dance, embrace my inner sexiness and ehem, try to absorb his energy. Plus though he's big in talent and has like fivethousandmilliongazillion views on his YouTube account I appreciate that he's still a humble guy that just loves dancing and sharing his passion.
So recently, Fredy decided to do a concept video to Beyonce's "Dance for You". The lead is Ah Hua / Xuehui (someone you'll find familiar if you watch all his class videos) - who is a super young and very talented, versatile dancer.
I also had the chance to chap jit ka and support this production with the rest of Kosmic crew!
This was the original choreo:

(in it you can see Marcia!!! who is also a Kosmic girl but who couldn't join us for the shoot :<)
Kosmic Crew -

My ladies who are so committed to their craft... I swear I've learnt something from each and every one of them and enjoy performing with them so much!!! SO MUCH LOVE!!! They're all so good that they really push me to improve in terms of performance and technicality to meet their level. It's a blessing to be part of this team.
SOOOO yeah! The shoot was pretty no frills and so professionally done thanks to Jaze and Irwin, and Jerry! Many thanks to you guys for taking time to shoot us :)
Here are some pics from "behind the scenes" -

and here Fredy does a little introduction...

andddd last but not least, here's the final product:

If you like what you see, Fredy and Ah Hua (and loads of like, perhaps the best dancers in SG) teach at O School! See you there :)
LOVE,
STEPH.

HA. just had to post that cos I think it looks cool.
p.s. - props if you watched ALL THE VIDEOS!!

DS2DIO: To People Who Love Dance
http://youtu.be/WoAjE1aioHE
"A single look, a shift in weight, a hand, a palm, a finger, can move you; can seduce you; can make you believe in magic.
because movement is the most basic form of communication for every human being on the planet - it expresses what a whole bunch of words never could.
...But it's not about how many flips, or how many spins, or how straight. It's how far you can stretch your soul."

My first contemporary dance classes
Suddenly remembered ... my first contemporary classes in LA. i'd spent a month in LA in 2009 after my exchange programme at Purdue just for fun and to dance. it took great guts for me to go for contemp classes because i've never been technically trained, and i was too scared...
but a friend i'd made who happened to be a dancer too told me that it was an experience not to be missed. and i thought, nothing to lose, so i went ahead.
The first contemporary class I took at Debbie Reynolds was a class by Rob Peters; he choreographed to Stupid Things by Robin Thicke. The class wasn't daunting at all in that he didn't emphasize on technicalities - e.g. if you could do a triple pirouette, go ahead. and if you couldn't, just one would suffice - but use up the music it was meant to fill. and it was then i realized... because it was so fluid, so pedestrian... i felt so free dancing for the first time. and it was honest and it was real and it felt so good! this was the choreo, and the dancer in my class that i couldn't take my eyes off was the girl in the middle at 1:20. i think her name was mickey or smth, and she was from japan. watching her made me want to bawl my eyes out.
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThohrxTUq-k]
My second class was forgettable because it was a string of technical jargon - and I'm not denying that technique is very important in dance! But i think i was too busy trying to figure if my balance was right, or on how high i could jump or how high my leg went or smth. I don't even remember the song the choreographer used. I don't even remember the choreographer... sadly.
My first contemporary class at Millenium was by Nick Lanzisera. I don't even know what song he used. It was different in that it wasn't as emotionally engaging as Rob Peter's class, but the fluidity of movement and musicality had me going as well... and for the first time in my LIFE, out of all the classes I had taken, I was amongst the 3 called out of class to perform!!! damn scary!!! but it was such a compliment and i think i will remember that feeling forever.
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUe8hJkVH0w]
i wish there were more choreographers and instructors like these in singapore! i really loved the freedom of movement and the freedom to express!!! 3 EXCLAMATION MARKS FOR THAT.
when i returned i was inspired to choreo my gravity piece; a bit paisey cos... no technique involved, just pure expression, i hope it came through!
(i was nursing a broken heart ;( )

on... judgmental dancers
ok i actually tweeted this but i guess it's easier to blog about it.
i remember i'd gone to watch a huge dance convention one year, and i thought it was amazing. i was deeply moved by the determination and motivation of the teams, and some of the performances nearly pushed me to tears.
someone else had watched it another year. and he told me, "mine was better than yours" - and he was so damned confident about it.
i was rather appalled... because i think dance touches each of us in different ways. who was he to say the experience i had, the emotions i felt, the way i was inspired - it was all less superior than his? the factors were so vastly different. different dancers. different items. different times. different situations. please explain how you could come to that conclusion?
another time in uni, another dancer had judged me because i didn't push myself to choreograph a piece of my own (i was collaborating with others). again, i was very upset because i didn't think he was in a position to dictate where i should be in my progress with dance / as a choreographer. at that time, choreographing wasn't a priority to me. instead, i wanted to focus on other aspects of dance... was it wrong? why was i being punished by that person?
i dont think it's ever fair for any dancer to judge any other dancer if we all share the same heart for dance... i think our skills, priorities and challenges differ too much from person to person. we're always learning, and there are so many things to learn in the world of dance. some things you pick up faster, some things slower. you can't focus on everything at once. and of course, some of us can't afford to have our worlds revolve around dancing. sometimes life happens... life gets in the way, and you don't have the time to prioritize dance anymore. that might slow you down, but it doesn't mean it will stop you from moving on.
in conclusion. (like a badly written jc gp essay) dance is such a personal journey. as dancers, we might all going down the same kind of path but as people, we're all so different that there's really no basis at all to be judging...
the only right thing to do, i guess, is to keep on going, and encourage others to do so too.
and the only wrong is when ur ego comes in the way and impedes your growth.
i don't think there are any other right or wrongs in dance...

On...ballet
whoah just checked out these trailers
it's amazing how much discipline and tenacity ballet dancers have. i took ballet as a kid but got bored from barre work. and as i progress, the pain with pointe didn't seem worth it at all. (you are basically balancing your entire body weight on like 3 toes on each foot, on a block of wood - cue blisters and bleeding)
as with every other style of dance, ballet requires rigorous training to execute it with finesse; but i would say, with a lot more pain involved. technique, posture, poise, flexibility & emotions are all so paramount to this art - it isn't enough just to have one factor nailed down. furthermore ballet has a whole sleu of french terms for all their moves. serious ballerinas also have to go through a series of examinations under international dance training and educational organizations and each examination tests a ballet dancer's technique, music and performance skills. look at the kind of things they put their bodies through to get the perfect arch!! PLUS guy dancers have to struggle with the stereotype of being gay or feminine.
muchos respectos, ballerinos.
would definitely try to catch the documentary!

Singapore Dance Delight 03
BIGGG congrats to Da Street Soulz who will be repping Singapore in Japan (JDD)!
Gin, Ah Hei, Ah Hua, An An - stole the stage with pure technique and no gimmicks. Deserving winners!
See the musicality and techniqueeee. GIRL POWER!
Also a big kudos to Carol and Fredy for producing an awesome show - the stage set up & multimedia was one of the best I've ever seen.
SDD Vol 03 - the bar has been brought UP man! The standard was crazy high across many of the groups, I think the judges must have had a really hard time deciding on the winners.
